Daily urinary excretion of uranium in occupationally unexposed humans from Nigeria

چکیده
The main aim of this study was to determine and evaluate urinary excretion values of uranium in occupationally unexposed subjects from Nigeria. As several uranium mines are running in Nigeria and the operations could be a risk of contamination for the workers as well as for the members of the public, biomonitoring of urine could provide information about the exposure to uranium for the subjects. Therefore, baseline values of uranium in urine are needed from subjects living in areas without mining activities. Volunteers of both genders (age range 3 to 78 years), living in the south-western region of Nigeria, were asked to collect 24h-urine samples. The concentration measurements of uranium in urine were performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, urinary creatinine values were determined for normalization of the renal uranium relative to the creatinine concentrations. The urinary uranium concentrations and their creatinine normalized values ranged from <10.4 to 150 ng L -1 (median 13.8 ng L -1 ) and from 2.52 to 252.7 ng g -1 creatinine (median 33.4 ng g -1 creatinine), respectively, for adult subjects above 15 years of both genders. An increased uranium excretion value of 61.6 ng L -1 (median), and of 76.0 ng g -1 creatinine,

Renal effects of uranium in drinking water.
Animal studies and small studies in humans have shown that uranium is nephrotoxic. However, more information about its renal effects in humans following chronic exposure through drinking water is required. We measured uranium concentrations in drinking water and urine in 325 persons who had used drilled wells for drinking water. We measured urine and serum concentrations of calcium, phosphate, ...
متن کاملUpper reference limits for biomarkers of exposure to aromatic diisocyanates.
OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study were to determine the levels of 2,4-toluenediamine, 2,6-toluenediamine, 1,5-naphthtalenediamine and 4,4'-methylenediphenyldianiline in hydrolyzed urine and plasma for occupationally unexposed workers and to calculate upper reference limits (URLs). These analytes are biomarkers of exposure to 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate (2,4-TDI a...
متن کاملThe effect of cement dust exposure on haematological and liver function parameters of cement factory workers in Sokoto, Nigeria.
This study measured haematological and liver function parameters in workers occupationally exposed to cement dust in order to test the hypothesis that cement dust exposure may perturb these functions. Assessment of haematological parameters and liver function were performed in 23 workers occupationally exposed to cement dust (mean years of exposure 9.6+/- 1.5 years) and 46 matched unexposed con...
متن کاملThe urinary excretion of citrate in uranium-poisoned rats.
The increased urinary excretion of citrate following administration of sodium bicarbonate has been noted by many investigators (l-9). During the course of work on the effect of uranium on various metabolic processes we wished to ascertain whether the kidney poisoned by uranium would excrete citrate to the same extent that a normal kidney does after administration of sodium bicarbonate. Surprisi...
متن کاملRelation between urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid excretion and concentration of lead in the blood of workers occupationally exposed to lead.
Urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid (ABA) concentration was determined by fluorometric high performance liquid chromatography in 22 workers occupationally exposed to lead. The urinary excretion of ABA was increased with increasing exposure to lead. The excretion of urinary ABA had a significant correlation with concentration of lead in blood (Pb-B) (r = 0.581), similar to the correlation of Pb-B ...
